Winter 2022-23 - Alma theater
An orphanage for parents
Premiere: October 2022

“The Orphanage for Parents” is built way up, atop the hill, and it’s a school different from the others. Parents are the ones sitting behind the desks, and are being taught about how to welcome a child, how to care for them, talk to them, listen to them, but above all how to love and make them feel safe. Cooking classes, home ec classes, vocabulary, boundary control and patience exercises. Everything they need to be ready for such an important moment in their lives. But, as the years go by, some are leaving the School happy, while others stay behind and still wait…
“The Orphanage for Parents”, based on the book by Christos Daskalakis, is the story of a boy who seeks for the safest hug in the world. It is a story about acceptance and rejection, about limits and freedom, about the “shoulds” of the world and the “wants” we really need. A story about parents and educators who are not intimidated by difficulties, who persevere, who try, who truly love and keep on giving.
A story about children who, when they are in the spotlight, will be able to discover for themselves the power of giving, accepting, patience and essential love.
- What do you want from a kid, Paul asked all blushed with shyness and embarrassment.
- Allow us to love them for what they are, today and forever, they all replied…
The School for Parents is a story about everything that can give us the greatest gift of life.
Our kids!
